Pivot Power plans to deploy a 100MW/200MWh battery energy storage project in the UK

China Energy Storage Network News: According to foreign media reports, British energy storage investment developer Pivot Power plans to cooperate with energy technology supplier Wärtsilä to deploy a total scale of 100MW/ in two locations in the West Midlands of the United Kingdom. 200MWh battery energy storage project.

These projects will be deployed in Pivot Power's "Energy Superhub" (Energy Superhub), which is an energy facility that combines battery energy storage systems and electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities. One of the energy super hubs will begin construction in the fourth quarter of this year, and the other energy super hub will begin construction in the first quarter of 2022. The two companies are discussing development and construction issues with the local government Coventry City Council, Sandwell City Council and West Midlands Development Agency.

Wärtsilä will provide battery energy storage systems for the two energy super hubs, with management support provided by its GEMS digital energy platform. The GEMS platform dynamically optimizes the energy system through a series of applications, and provides feedback to energy storage asset owners, operations and stakeholders in the transaction value chain.

The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the energy super hub will be connected to the local high-voltage transmission network through power connection facilities, mainly used for fast charging of electric vehicles, and to provide electricity to important local locations such as public charging hubs and bus stations.

The cooperation is based on the two energy super hub projects that the two companies have built in Oxford and Kent. Pivot Power has signed an order with Wärtsilä in 2019 and then announced the contract in 2020.

The Oxford battery energy storage project with an installed capacity of 50MW is part of the largest hybrid deployment facility in the UK, which uses a combination of lithium-ion batteries and flow batteries and was launched in June this year. Pivot Power claims that this is the UK`s first large-scale battery energy storage system directly connected to the transmission network. It is also part of the £41 million ($55.83 million) Oxford Energy Super Hub project supported by the British government, which aims to Integrate energy storage systems, electric vehicle charging facilities, low-carbon heating and smart energy management technologies to help the Oxford region achieve decarbonization by 2040.

The energy super hub can help Pivot Power provide battery energy storage systems and large-capacity power supply connections, support the growth of renewable energy generation, and create a power infrastructure for large-scale and rapid electric vehicle charging. Pivot Power was acquired by French energy giant EDF at the end of 2019.

Andy Tang, Wärtsilä`s vice president in charge of energy storage and optimization, said: [The UK has recently set an ambitious energy target to reduce carbon emissions by 78% by 2035, while electricity flexibility is 100% feasible. Renewable energy and the key to economic decarbonization. The energy storage systems we provide are helping industry-leading innovators like Pivot Power make these goals a reality."
