Key Capture Energy plans to build a new 150MW/600MWh Battery Energy Storage System in New York

China Energy Storage Network News: According to foreign media reports, a 150MW/600MWh battery energy storage system planned by Key Capture Energy will become a core component of the proposed "Advanced Clean Energy Underground Highway", which can convert renewable energy power from Transport from northern New York to New York City.

The New York State transmission system needs to support the continued rapid growth of renewable energy generation. The State`s "Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act" requires that by 2030 70% of electricity must come from renewable energy sources. Although the northern part of New York State is very suitable for the construction and operation of wind and solar farms, the demand for energy is mainly concentrated in the densely populated urban areas of New York City.

With the commitment of New York State to invest more than US$340 million in upgrading its transmission network, the European Avangrid company proposed its proposed Excelsior Connect project, which will connect the high-voltage direct current transmission line to renewable energy power generation facilities and battery energy storage systems ( BESS).

If the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency (NYSERDA) approves Avangrid's continuous request for proposals (RFP) application, the project may begin construction in 2024 and be put into operation in 2026.

Avangrid has established a partnership with Key Capture Energy, a developer of battery energy storage systems. The company has opened a large-scale battery energy storage project in New York and is currently building another energy storage project. Key Capture Energy CEO Jeff Bishop and New York market development director Taylor Quarles said in an interview that the project will help to introduce renewable energy power generation facilities into New York City on a large scale and overcome the limitations of the existing grid .

Quarles said, "The Excelsior Connect project combines several gigawatts of renewable energy power generation facilities (wind power facilities and solar power facilities) in upstate New York. Avangrid will build a 108-mile underground high-voltage DC transmission line, and Key Capture Energy will deploy a 150MW battery energy storage system, which will be deployed at the northern end of the transmission line to help wind power facilities and solar power facilities to deliver electricity to New York City when needed. Its ultimate goal Yes, at present 70% of the energy in southern New York State comes from renewable energy resources, which can promote the use of renewable energy power generation facilities in northern New York during the peak period."

Avangrid has two business units, one focuses on the construction of power grids, and the other focuses on the construction of renewable energy facilities. Quarles pointed out that this gives the company a wealth of knowledge and experience in both business areas required for the project. Because transmission lines are laid underground, they are much less likely to face opposition from local people than more traditional overhead lines.

Jeff Bishop, CEO of Key Capture Energy, said that the company suggested to its partners that the deployment of a 150MW battery energy storage system will help support high-voltage DC lines up to 1,310MW, taking into account the expected power generation of solar power generation facilities and wind power generation facilities. Transmission capacity.

Bishop said, "We calculated this scale based on simple economics. Because wind power generation facilities and solar power generation facilities are connected to this power line, sometimes there may be excessive power generation. Therefore, we can base the most meaningful Ways to optimize the installed capacity of the battery energy storage system so that it can provide New York City with the required all-weather power. This is the real reason for the planned deployment of the battery energy storage system with an installed capacity of 150MW and a continuous discharge time of 4 hours. We consider Some questions were raised: Should it be a 1-hour battery energy storage system? Or an 8-hour battery energy storage system? Or what is the combination between the two? In the end, we calculated that 150MW/600MWh provides the greatest value for New York taxpayers The scale of the battery energy storage system."
